Watson, Ph.D. Coordinator of American Studies
Lynn University

I am always being asked to grade Obama's presidency. In place of offering him a grade, I put together a list of his accomplishments thus far. I think you would agree that it is very impressive. His first six months have been even more active than FDRs or LBJs the two standards for such assessments. Yet, there is little media attention given to much of what he has done. Of late, the media is focusing almost exclusively on Obama's critics, without holding them responsible for the uncivil, unconstructive tone of their disagreements or without holding the previous administration responsible for getting us in such a deep hole. The misinformation and venom that now passes for political reporting and civic debate is beyond description.

As such, there is a need to set the record straight. What most impresses me is the fact that Obama has accomplished so much not from a heavy-handed or top-down approach but from a style that has institutionalized efforts to reach across the aisle, encourage vigorous debate, and utilize town halls and panels of experts in the policy-making process. Beyond the accomplishments, the process is good for democracy and our democratic processes have been battered and bruised in recent years.

Let me know if I missed anything in the list (surely I did).

_____

1. Ordered all federal agencies to undertake a study and make recommendations for ways to cut spending
2. Ordered a review of all federal operations to identify and cut wasteful spending and practices
3. Instituted enforcement for equal pay for women
4. Beginning the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq
5. Families of fallen soldiers have expenses covered to be on hand when the body arrives at Dover AFB
6. Ended media blackout on war casualties; reporting full information
7. Ended media blackout on covering the return of fallen soldiers to Dover AFB; the media is now permitted to do so pending adherence to respectful rules and approval of fallen soldier's family
8. The White House and federal government are respecting the Freedom of Information Act
9. Instructed all federal agencies to promote openness and transparency as much as possible
10. Limits on lobbyist's access to the White House
11. Limits on White House aides working for lobbyists after their tenure in the administration
12. Ended the previous stop-loss policy that kept soldiers in Iraq/Afghanistan longer than their enlistment date
13. Phasing out the expensive F-22 war plane and other outdated weapons systems, which weren't even used or needed in Iraq/Afghanistan
14. YES! YES! I finally finished this book! YES!

Okay I really finished it like a week ago but I'm still happy it's done! It was only 245 pages but I've been reading it since MAY! I never take that long to read a book. Especially one that is that short! I read any Harry Potter book in 6 hours or less.

The reason for being so long? Well, I love history. That's no mystery. But this one is so full of information it made the book boring and it wasn't like it was all different history. It was the same history, reworded through out the book.

Did I lean anything? Hell yes. If there is something Florescu and McNally are good at it's giving you enough information on Vlad Tepes Dracula to gorge yourself stupid on. I learned allot, however, it couldn't have been more dry cut if they tried.

I read In Search for Dracula by both of the authors and McNally's Dracula Was a Woman and they are also dry and for whatever reason it comes back every time to oral sex. I refuse to buy that all vampire legend relates back to that. No. Sorry, DON'T buy that.

So what's next for me? Well right now I'm trying to finish up Queen of the Damned. (Yes, I know. I'm vampire obsessed.) And then I've found another one on Erezbet Bathory. And it's a HISTORICAL one this time! WHOOO HOOO! I cannot begin to stress how hard that is to find. Yeah, I know, I've got the holy grail of her history books but it never hurts to learn more.

I'm going to try to get a book on the Romanov Family. Apparently, one of my ancestors was the Czarina's body guard. Yeah, I know he did a sucky job but it's still freaking cool! I found one about their assasination. Of course I found one where the son used a time machine and came to the present. Seriously people? This is as bad as the The Blood Countess where her male ancestor kills his ex lovers daughter and Elizabeth Bathory takes over the mother who was in a mental institution. Horrible book!

Alright, I'm off to work some more on this Baby Express Kit. Can I just state it is TOO CUTE! My friend may not get it. Seriously, it's too cute to give up. =PCountesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05904673935137016386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3352015276599168645.post-23530649073702123342010-02-20T20:58:00.001-08:002010-02-20T21:10:13.371-08:00Weekly WIPOkay, I'm behind this week. Cut me some slack, I'm sick. With what, I don't know. The kids gave me something fun though, let me tell you.

Anywho, I put Tracery Dragons and Snowman Stocking aside for right now. It's done with DMC Floss and Krienik Metalics on Crystal Lugana Mercedes from Picture This Plus. I'm trying to get it done fast but doubt I'll get far. I keep finding I don't have the right colors. Six boxes of floss and not enough to do the design. Go figure. (just ignore the rings marks. The black oval is my new Needle Minder. Can I just say that I love it? It's this little magnetic disc that I can attach to the fabric and it keeps my needle on that magnet. I got a hibiscus. Honestly I didn't get far. Things have been crazy for this week. I got the name finished and one skate done on Snowmen Stocking from Cross Stitch Gold. I'm getting tired of snowmen. I'm trying to get it done since I'm so friggin' close.

I've also been working on Teresa Wentzler's Tracery Dragons. I kept working on it after this picture was taken so it does look a bit more advanced. I've gotten almost all the Cross Stitching done on one page. Since it's pretty much two or so, I'm close. Heh. It's The Spirit of Cross Stitch Angel by Brook's Books.
I started with the wings and have to remind myself not to pull too tight because if it rips, there's no fixing it. I started with the wings on Metallic Silver Paper. Sorry the quality is so crappy. I couldn't use a flash, it was completely washed out with light. There's suppose to be a little dog too but I'm not sewing it. It looks like a rat.I like it so far. I've got to do the other wing, the beads and the white on the outside but it's coming along nicely. I have to sew the body part on brown paper so maybe that will yield a better looking picture.

I also finished the wedding sampler I was working on and am very happy it's done. I'm not sure why but my brain hated working on it and it was giving me a head ache by the time I was done.

I'm making good progress on the snowman stocking. I'll post a picture of it on Friday. It's my main focus right now so I can get it done and move onto the others. I've got two to sew for my sisters room mates.

I've also got something new to watch while I sew. I picked up season 1 of House the other night! And the bonus, it was only $17! My friend Valyn sat and insisted for at least six months that I'd love House, I had to watch House and I kept putting it off. Then this Christmas my sister got the DVD's as a gift and we had a House marathon. So Valyn was right. I'm still trying to figure out what he wins for it.

Speaking of him, today is his birthday! So a very Happy Birthday to a very amazing person! Believe me, anyone who can stay friends with my ass for 7 years is someone special indeed.Countesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05904673935137016386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3352015276599168645.post-9572435593035878892010-01-21T23:55:00.000-08:002010-01-22T00:07:35.396-08:00Weekly WIPI'm trying to make this more then a place to put finishes or my ramblings so I'm going to try and update weekly on my Works in Progress.

This is a stocking for my sister. I'm not a fan of the pattern so I've been struggling to finish it. As you can see by the date, I've got get it done soon. I'm pushing to get it done by the end of the day, especially since I have several other projects to get to. Hopefully the newlyweds like it.

So now I'm off to finish at least one of them so I can get to finishing the others. I've got a project coming up with perforated paper. I've never sewn on that material before so it should be an interesting experiment. I've also got another pair of the turtle booties to sew in blue. I've got them sitting right next to me but you know me, I love to start projects but finishing them is a whole 'nother deal. I told myself I can't start another new project until two or three of the projects in my basket are done. I'm trying to be disciplined. So I get to sew two of everything! Fun! =P
I had created the turtle pattern after my return from Hawai'i. The hour is getting very late to be able to indulge in having key decisions made by religious people - by rationalists - by those who would steer the ship of state, not by a compass, but by the equivalent of reading the entrails of a chicken."-Bill Maher

I have noticed that in this crisis in Hati, which I have done my best not to think of because of how tragic it is, people are assholes.

Not getting it? There are people who call themselves "Good Christians" and they make stupid comments like "Well, it's sad but instead of the President giving money to Hati and Louisiana and they are still a disaster, we need to take care of the US first. When we're fixed then we can help."

Are you fucking kidding me? Seriously? over 100,000 people are assumed dead and you are smashing people for helping and donating money because you feel we're not in a good place right now? Guess what, the rest of the world DOES NOT center around this fucking elitist society.

And you know what? that is possibly one of the most Un-Christian things to say. I botched Frog Prince big time so I bought another one I've had my eye on and started it. It's coming along nicely. It takes a while to sew. They use full stitches and you can use a tent stitch (which I cannot do) or a full X. Since my supplies are limited around here, I had to buy 28 count instead of the 25 count they recommend. (I can't buy 25 count linen around here.)

So here's two days worth of work (About oh 8 hours or so) on Queens Croquet Ground by Scott Gustafson. I placed the picture next to it so you can see what it's suppose to look like when it's done. (Which given how many projects I have going should be done in about oh 20 years or so. lol) It looks allot nicer in person but isn't that how it always is with photos?

Countesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05904673935137016386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3352015276599168645.post-59602684862722458762009-11-19T19:57:00.001-08:002009-11-19T20:04:49.222-08:00Work in Progress for the WeekSo I finished the Delightful Dragon Fob and now have a new project. It's hard because the fabric is hand dyed so the dark colors varies and it's not easy to find the holes since it's a cashel linen. I'm doing okay right now but I'm going slower then on a lighter color.

I also worked somewhat on my wedding gift for my cousin. It's a simple stitching deal but I just am not into it. It also says Dream, Hope and Believe, along with the big word Wish.

Countesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05904673935137016386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3352015276599168645.post-71724708054777774712009-11-08T02:25:00.000-08:002009-11-08T03:07:41.430-08:00Domestic AbuseOkay I was going to bed and made the mistake of not collapsing the damn comments on the YouTube video on Rihanna's interview on 20/20. And now I'm all pissed off so here's a venting for me. I know this was suppose to only be on my crafts but I'm pissed and won't sleep if I don't get this out.

I am so damn fucking tired of people who say the following things:
1) She deserved it for any number of various reasons. She hit him, She wouldn't let it go, She didn't shut up, She just deserved it, She must have baited him. You get the idea.
2) He made a mistake, let it go.
3) This is just a publicity stunt to promote her new album.

Look, even if she did hit him, did she deserve what she got? No. I'm not saying it would have been okay for her to hit him, but to be punched, bit, choked twice, almost loose consciousness and have her nose broken is clear sign he had no control. She admitted she wouldn't let go he lied to her and he wouldn't let go that she didn't let it go and was backed into the wall. But come on, you wanna look at that damn photo of her and tell me what he did was fucking okay? Because she may or may not have provoked it? Please, shut the fuck up. I don't care what your theories are. Hitting someone is NEVER FUCKING OKAY.

Secondly, yes he's young and yes he made a mistake but this was a BIG mistake and he made it in the public eye. And that public eye got him off the fucking hook. If I ever beat a guy up like he did to her, my ass would be slammed in a cell and left there to rot. And this mistake wasn't getting a speeding ticket. He almost killed her and threatened to kill her. Not once, TWICE. I don't care if you're only 19. He fucked up MAJORLY and he doesn't seem to grasp the severity of his situation. He got a slap on the wrist and walked out of court smiling. Oh yeah, he gets it. He will get it when he does kill someone and his happy ass is on trial for murder. THEN he'll get it and even then he'll get a slap on the wrist. Look at fucking OJ and tell me that celebrity doesn't help you get off the hook.

And to the last point, maybe it is a damn publicity stunt but please tell me what in there would be AT ALL objectionable. She acknowledge that she backed him into a wall and that no matter what it wasn't okay. And she did more then most celebrities do. She acknowledge that she was a role model and that by going back to Chris Brown she was showing her younger fans that it was okay to go back to an abuse and she didn't want anyone to be hurt by that. Wow, a woman who sees that she's a role model in the public eye and does what's right. She is trying to speak out against domestic abuse and tried to show young girls that it's not okay by speaking out. Seriously, this woman is just causing trouble and clearly only interested in promoting her album. Fuck people, what do you want her to do? Sit there and say "Yes I provoked him to the point where this is okay"? Domestic abuse is never okay and she had courage to get out when she did and work through what happened and tried to come to some normality.

Can I also point out that HE went on a media campaign to repair his image? Larry King, CNN, MTV, etc. Saying that he was wrong and accepted it and that he saw his mother abused and swore he'd never do it and he was sorry but he didn't mean to do it. So his media campaign is okay but her doing two interviews is a publicity stunt? Now who's setting up the double standard. You say that if she was the one who beat him this bad it wouldn't be such a big deal but when he does TV shows for months, it's okay. She does two interviews after 8 months and CLEARLY that's publicity. No that's not a fucking double standard. It's okay for him but if she does it later then she has a scandalous motive. And then he has the gaul to come out when she does her interview and state that he respects her right to say what she wants, that this should be kept a private matter. Oh sure, when you give the interviews it's okay because it's image repair. She does it and clearly it should be kept private. Jesus you people are fucking idiots.

I've never been in an abusive relationship. I can't speak as to "I know how she feels. I know what she's deal with, I've been there." I haven't. I know how incredibly lucky for being able to say that. But I also know enough that no matter what she did, that it was OKAY for this kinda abuse to happen. Yeah we all have said "Well that person clearly deserved to be hit" but no one really deserves it. Especially to this degree. And yes, if she beat him up this badly, I'd say the same damn thing. It wouldn't be okay. But don't make fucking excuses for him because he's only 19 and has "his whole life and career ahead of him." It's not excusable behavior. EVER. FOR ANYONE. CELEBRITY OR NOT. How many more times can I say that before it sinks into everyone's fucking skull and you get that?

I hate people and I'm still going to bed angry. I'll talk to everyone later. I'm out

-CountessCountesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05904673935137016386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3352015276599168645.post-40599576882754780122009-11-05T18:10:00.000-08:002009-11-05T18:14:47.473-08:00HealthcarePlease understand that I am not attacking anyone or their beliefs. With that in mind, please don't call me uninformed or too naive to understand. I love politics and I make my decisions based on what I know and I learn, not based on someone's charm and appeal.

I have noticed allot of people are upset with the proposed health care bill and honestly, for the life of me, I do not understand why.

No, I do not agree with everything in the proposed bill. I do not agree with taxing small businesses, I don't think certain things should be covered, taking benefits from Medicare and Medicaid and some other things.

However, I believe that health care shouldn't be a privilege but a basic right to the American people. So many say we are the greatest nation but we don't cover our people. I have a friend who works two jobs and has four kids, one with diabetes, and they cannot afford health care for them or their children. So what if the bill isn't prefect? Why can't both sides try to make things work so we can get something fair passed to take care of our people, instead of yelling and pointing fingers and shouting that it's all a socialist threat? It's not like 1984 and the dictatorship in the book. It's a basic human right that needs to be met.

People are yelling about how it'll bankrupt social security and that our future generations will be in large debt. Financial advisers have shown over the long haul that it will be cheaper and we won't be in huge debt like originally thought. And Social Security is already going bust because the Baby Boomers are retiring. There isn't enough being paid into social security to compensate the money having to be paid out.

Please also keep in mind that in the world, we pay the THIRD LOWEST taxes. People are yelling about how they don't want to pay for other peoples health care, but we pay for other peoples children to go to school, take care of roads we never drive on and pay for other parts of the nation that we will never use or access. I know the economy is bad, I'm not saying it isn't, but by paying a little more we are showing compassion for our fellow Americans to be able to get proper health care. Nearly 47 MILLION people are without health care. Next year the number is projected to be 60 million. Why is it so hard to help them?

50%-61% of the American public want the public option. If you don't want the government's health care then don't take it but there are people out there that need it.

Do I think the economy needs to be fixed? Yes, but I also understand that it will take longer then a year to do so. I don't know if even five years is enough. It's going to be a long and slow recovery.

I'm done now. I'm walking away and not looking at this again. I'm tired of reading so much negativity towards something that I think will benefit America over the long run and I know that it will come here.Countesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05904673935137016386noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3352015276599168645.post-32509086707669768292009-11-04T16:33:00.001-08:002009-11-04T16:40:47.263-08:00NevermindWas gonna post a Work in Progress but decided not to.
